Small Investment = Big Results (Mark 4:30-34)

Jesus said, "How can I describe the Kingdom of God?  What story should I use to illustrate it?  It is like  a mustard seed planted in the ground.  It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of all garden plants; it grows long branches and birds can make nests in its shade."

Jesus used many similar stories and illustrations to teach the people as much as they could understand.  In fact, in his public ministry he never taught  without using parables; but afterward, when he was alone with his disciples, he explained everything to them.

Have you ever seen a mustard seed?  It's Okay if you have not because Jesus tells us in the text that it is the smallest of all seeds.

In God's kingdom it's a different economy all you need is a small investment but any banker out there would tell you it's foolishness in the world.  God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. (1 Corinthians 1:270. 

In God's kingdom all you need is a small investment and things will grow out of proportion like the plants in a garden.  A small seed equals a large tomato plant with many tomatoes on it. God constantly shows us through nature his economy.  He grows humility and abolishes pride. He grows a small amount of faith into a tree with a purpose to carry the burden of the world for healing.  Faith has to have a purpose.  Without purpose faith is a weed. An investment has a purpose.

I wanted to include that second part of the passage on purpose, Jesus taught people through parables which are stories explaining truths found in the scriptures.  Now this part can be divided in two part.

1) He taught people only what they could understand

2) He explained everything to his disciples

The separation is quite tragic because depending on your relationship to Jesus you can be an outsider or an insider.

He could explain to you only what you can understand (outsider) or explain everything.(disciple)

This all depend how much you want to invest in.

Are you fearful of the economy?  Are you not so sure about God keeping his promise?  

Or, are you going to invest without fear the little faith you have got and take a plunge for better or for worse till death do us part?

In this case though, death unlike marriage does not part us from Jesus but unite us to Him in joyous celebration.

Go ahead make that investment of faith in what could become the biggest thing in your life.
