Finding the Purpose of Boredom (Deuteronomy 8:2-5)

Finding the Purpose of Boredom (Deuteronomy 8:2-5)

Finding the Purpose of Boredom (Deuteronomy 8:2-5)

  2. Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands.  3. Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors.  He did this to teach you that people need more than bread for their life; real life comes by feeding on every word of the Lord.  4. For all this forty years your clothes didn't wear out, and your feet didn't blister or swell.  5. So you should realize that just as a parent disciplines a child, the Lord your God disciplines you to help you. (Deuteronomy 8:2-5) 1) Boredom for testing (v.2) Imagine being in the wilderness for forty years and turning in circle.  How would you feel after this long of a trip?  The end result of a long process was going to be to test their character and commitment to obedience. 2) Humbling experience (v.3 a) He humbled them

The Word of God is the Light of my Life (Psalm 119:105-112)

  105. Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.  106. I've promised it once, and I'll promise it again: I will obey your wonderful laws.  107. I have suffered much, O Lord; restore my life again, just as you promised.  108. Lord, accept my grateful thanks and teach me your laws.  109. My life constantly hangs in the balance, but I will not stop obeying your laws.  110. The wicked have set traps for me along your path, but I will not turn from your commandments.  111. Your decrees are my treasure; they are truly my heart's delight.  112. I am determined to keep your principles, even forever, to the very end. 1) What is Light (v.105) Light is illuminating, comforting and restoring.  Light gives life to all.  The spiritual light illuminates, comforts and restores.  All you have to do is turn to it.  Jesus is the Light of the world. (John 8:12) 2) What is a decision (v.106) A decision is a commitment to do something.   A decision needs to be made repeatedly.  Th

Constant Sweetness of the Word (Psalm 119:97-104)

  97. Oh, how I love your law! I think about it all day long.  98. Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for your commands are my constant guide.  99. Yes, I have more insight than my teachers, for I am always thinking of your decrees.  100. I am even wiser than my elders, for I have kept your commandments.  101. I have refused to walk on any path of evil, that I may remain obedient to your word.  102. I haven't turned away from your laws, for you have taught me well.  103. How sweet are your words to my taste; they are sweeter than honey.  104. Your commandments give me understanding; no wonder I hate every false way of life. (Psalm 119:97-104) 1) Constant delight in the Word (v.97-99) Constantly thinking upon the Word.  They become his priority throughout the day.  The Bible makes you wiser than your enemies.  You find yourself always a step ahead of them, if you meditate on it all day long. 2) Constant refusal to do evil (v.100-101) As we constantly think on his Word and

The Agony of Waiting (Psalm 119:81-88)

  81. I faint with longing for your salvation; but I have put my hope in your word.  82. My eyes are straining to see your promises come true.  When will you comfort me?  83. I am shriveled like a wineskin in the smoke, exhausted with waiting.  But I cling to your principles and obey them.  84. How long must I wait?  When will you punish those who persecute me?  85. These arrogant people who hate your law have dug deep pits for me to fall into.  86. All your commands are trustworthy.  Protect me from those who hunt me down without cause.  87. They almost finished me off, but I refused to abandon your commandments.  88. In your unfailing love, spare my life; then I can continue to obey your decrees. (Psalm 119:81-88) 1) Hope will carry you through (v.81-84) When coping seems difficult, hope will carry your through the waiting.  Expectantly, his promise always brings comfort while waiting.  The answer will eventually come at the right time. 2) Protection is guaranteed (v.85-86) To the fa
